Do pool contractors need a license in Suffolk County?

Yes. Suffolk County requires Home Improvement Contractors to be licensed through the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. This covers most pool installation, liner replacement, heater/pump installation, and renovation work. Weekly chemical maintenance typically does not require an HIC license, but any construction, plumbing, or electrical work does.

You can look up a Suffolk HIC license online through the department's public license search. Ask any contractor for their license number before a contract is signed.

Note: a Nassau County license does not automatically cover Suffolk County work, and vice versa. Companies operating across both counties should hold both licenses — always verify.
